Mean Well APC-35-500 — 500 mA constant-current power supply

Mean Well APC-35-500 is a compact switching power supply operating in constant-current (CC) mode. It provides a rated output current of 500 mA, while the output voltage adjusts to the requirements of the powered circuit within a 25–70 V DC range. Maximum rated output power is 35 W.

A wide 90–264 V AC or 127–370 V DC input range supports operation across a broad range of power systems. Typical efficiency is 84%.

How to select the APC-35-500

Selecting a constant-current power supply starts with the rated operating current of the LED light source. The APC-35-500 is designed for LED sources and modules operating at 500 mA.

The voltage required by the powered circuit at this current should then be determined. It must remain within the driver's 25–70 V DC operating range. When several LED elements are connected in series, their forward voltages Vf are added together.

A correctly matched system therefore meets two fundamental conditions:

• rated LED operating current: 500 mA,
• required operating voltage of the complete powered circuit: 25–70 V DC.

LED systems designed for fixed-voltage operation, such as 12 V or 24 V installations, use constant-voltage power supplies. Selection of the APC-35-500 is based on the 500 mA rated current and the required Vf of the powered circuit.

Construction and protection

The power supply is housed in a fully isolated plastic enclosure rated IP42. Cooling is provided by free-air convection, allowing fanless operation.

The APC-35-500 provides short-circuit protection, over-voltage protection and an OVP operating range of 77–91 V. When over-voltage protection is activated, the output is shut down and normal operation is restored after input power is cycled.

The power supply also withstands a 300 V AC input surge for 5 seconds. Input-to-output dielectric withstand voltage is 3 kV AC, while insulation resistance exceeds 100 MΩ at 500 V DC.

Operating temperature and permissible load

The APC-35-500 has a specified operating temperature range of –30 to +70°C. According to the manufacturer's derating curve, full rated load can be used up to approximately 40°C, decreasing to approximately 60% at 70°C.

At 90 V AC, the static characteristic indicates approximately 80% load, while full rated load is available from approximately 100 V AC through 264 V AC.

Dimensions, wiring and installation

The APC-35-500 enclosure measures 84 × 57 × 29.5 mm. Input and output leads are 150 ±10 mm long and use UL1569 18 AWG wire.

Inrush current and circuit protection

Typical cold-start inrush current is 45 A at 230 V AC. For a 230 V circuit, MEAN WELL specifies a maximum of 5 units with a B16 circuit breaker and 9 units with a C16 circuit breaker.

APC-35 applications in LED equipment

MEAN WELL specifies the APC-35 series for applications including LED decorative and advertising equipment.

For LED lighting luminaires intended for the European Union market, MEAN WELL recommends the LPF, NPF, XLG, XLC or XLN series. The technical, safety and EMC requirements applicable to the complete end system should be considered during equipment design.
