LED Lighting & Heat
Heat is the LED’s enemy. Too much temperature cuts lumen output, shifts colour and reduces lifetime — for both LEDs and drivers. The upside? High-quality products cope with heat far better.
Why temperature matters
The critical metric inside an LED is junction temperature Tj. As Tj rises, brightness drops, colour drifts and phosphor ages faster. Power supplies suffer as electrolytic capacitors run hotter — every extra chunk of heat accelerates wear.
Plain-English tech facts
- L70 vs heat: roughly, a ~10 °C increase in Tj can shorten time to L70 significantly (diode-dependent).
- 14.4 W/m LED strip: in free air it can run hot; the same strip in an aluminium profile with thermal tape often runs 15–25 °C cooler.
- Power supplies: budget units with 85 °C capacitors age quicker in warm cavities than premium units using 105–125 °C parts and better thermal design.
Economy vs premium — why pay more?
| Area | Economy | High-quality |
|---|---|---|
| Materials / PCB | Thinner copper, weaker heat path | Thicker copper (e.g., 2–3 oz), aluminium MCPCBs, quality thermal tape |
| LEDs | Wider colour/lumen variation, faster aging when hot | Tighter binning, steadier colour and output at higher Tj |
| Driver | 85 °C capacitors, higher ripple when hot | 105–125 °C capacitors, lower ripple, full protections (OTP/OVP/SCP) |
| Lifetime | Shorter under elevated temps | Noticeably longer; slower degradation |
Design & buying for cool operation
- Use aluminium profiles for strips and add thermal interface tape.
- Choose 20–30% driver headroom to run cooler and extend life.
- Avoid sealed hot boxes: IP67 in tight cavities traps heat — ensure airflow.
- Check specs: ta/tc ratings, ripple, PF, protections and EMC compliance.
- Mind CRI and CCT: many high-CRI systems come with better substrates and thermal paths.
Mini-FAQ
Can a strip run without a profile?
It can, but it often overheats; faster diffuser yellowing and lumen loss follow. Profiles cost little, save a lot.
Do pricier drivers really help?
Yes — lower internal temperature, reduced ripple and better protections translate into system longevity.
Bottom line: heat kills LEDs slowly but surely. Invest in quality and cooling to save money over time.
